Journey from Technical Writer to Product Manager | Learn how to Break into Product Management | Ep-2 ft. Ravi Kumar Sapata

Have you ever wondered how a person with a background in technical writing can make the transition to become a successful product manager? In this candid chat with Ravi Kumar Sapata (Product Manager), we delve into his career journey from being a technical writer to building products for TeamViewer in Germany. It’s an inspiring story that showcases the power of passion, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities.

Following a Challenging Path

Ravi’s journey began in India, where he found himself working for larger organizations like UGS, Sun Microsystems, and Computer Associates as a technical writer. Although it was a lucrative career, Ravi felt like he wasn’t adding enough value to the companies he worked for. He longed for a more fulfilling job that aligned with his creative writing skills and passion for technology.

Driven by his desire to break free from technical writing and into a more tech-focused role, Ravi embarked on a new adventure. Alongside his sister, he started a startup called “Mom Seriously.” With the aim of providing homemade food to students in India’s Eastern region, Ravi saw the potential in the market and seized the opportunity. Despite their best efforts, they faced several operational and financial challenges that forced them to shut down the startup.

A Glimpse of the Product Management World

After the setback, Ravi decided to refocus on his career and explore new possibilities. He joined Autodesk as a technical writer, but he still yearned for a more challenging and rewarding role. This is when he met Mike Atticus, his product manager, during a business trip to San Francisco. Inspired by Mike’s passion and expertise in product management, Ravi realized that this was the path he wanted to pursue.

Armed with newfound determination, Ravi began immersing himself in the world of product management. He enrolled in an MBA program to enhance his credentials, conducted informational interviews with existing product managers, read books on the subject, and started blogging about his learnings. He also co-founded Product Camp Singapore, a thriving community of product managers that continues to grow to this day.

The Challenges of Being a New Product Manager

After years of hard work and persistence, Ravi finally landed his first product management role. However, his transition into the new position was not without difficulties. With no mentorship or guidance, he had to rely on the knowledge he acquired from books and his own intuition. The lack of a support system made the initial days challenging, but Ravi persevered and learned from his mistakes.

Reflecting on his journey, Ravi emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and resourcefulness. He advises aspiring product managers to immerse themselves in the field, connect with experienced professionals, and gain hands-on experience by offering assistance to startups or product teams within their organization.

In Conclusion

Ravi’s journey from a technical writer to a successful product manager is an inspirational tale of passion, persistence, and the willingness to embrace new challenges. While the road may be challenging, Ravi’s story encourages individuals to explore opportunities and follow their true calling. With dedication and a thirst for knowledge, anyone can break into the world of product management and carve out their own path to success.

Flipped Classroom

Our learners learn by discussing and debating on real-world problems and are actively involved in the solution design process.

Conventional classroom

Sage on Stage

  • A teacher shares the knowledge via live presentations
  • Teachers are at the center of the learning and considered sage on stage
  • Knowledge transfer is one-way and the focus is on knowledge retention
  • Learners don’t get to discuss their ideas or opinions in the class
  • Hence, most learners are unable to apply these concepts in their everyday work life
  • Great for scenarios, where knowledge acquisition and retention is the only focus

Flipped classroom

Guide on side

  • Learners are the center of the universe
  • Classes are meant for healthy discussions and debates on topics
  • Learners go through the material on their own provided by the mentors
  • Mentors work as guide on the side, with the learners
  • Learners develop skills on problem solving, critical thinking and self-learning – the 21st century skills that employers look for
  • Great for scenarios where application skills matter
  • 21st century skills require guide on the side. Simply acquiring knowledge is worthless now.
