Cracking a Product Management Interview with Fernando Delgado | Product Talks

Fernando Delgado started his product management journey in 2007 with Google as an Associate Product Manager. In 2012, he joined Yahoo with the objective of relaunching the company. His job soon became his passion and he soon decided to become an entrepreneur. He co-founded La Tienda Venezolana, offering an effective channel to purchase products made in Venezuela to Venezuelans living abroad. In addition, Fernando has also been, for many years now, coaching and mentoring aspiring product managers to help them get their dream job!
We recently invited Fernando for a Product Talks by Pragmatic Leaders on “ Cracking a Product Management Interview”
Fernando says, while interacting with various successful Product Managers who wanted to change careers and companies, he noticed a trend that was similar to NBA. Following the Slam Dunk contest of NBA, Fernando concluded that the journey of NBA is a sort of like a product career i.e a very long-term goal but the interview is like the Slam Dunk contest i.e. you require specific skills and training just to crack it.
He adds, to successfully crack a product management interview you must spend time in making yourself valuable to the company. This essentially implies, that in order to make a company buy your skills, you must first learn to correctly market them.

After spending a substantial amount of time coaching and mentoring Product Managers, Fernando concluded that on an average it takes 15-20 hours of serious commitment to get to your peak performance. He shared a 6 Point Agenda that every aspiring Product Manager must follow if they mean serious business. The agenda includes specific frameworks such as prepare your own behavior stories, doing product analysis of different products, investing time in improving your technical skills, solving analytical and estimation questions and most importantly, chalking out time to do tons of practice.

Flipped Classroom

Our learners learn by discussing and debating on real-world problems and are actively involved in the solution design process.

Conventional classroom

Sage on Stage

  • A teacher shares the knowledge via live presentations
  • Teachers are at the center of the learning and considered sage on stage
  • Knowledge transfer is one-way and the focus is on knowledge retention
  • Learners don’t get to discuss their ideas or opinions in the class
  • Hence, most learners are unable to apply these concepts in their everyday work life
  • Great for scenarios, where knowledge acquisition and retention is the only focus

Flipped classroom

Guide on side

  • Learners are the center of the universe
  • Classes are meant for healthy discussions and debates on topics
  • Learners go through the material on their own provided by the mentors
  • Mentors work as guide on the side, with the learners
  • Learners develop skills on problem solving, critical thinking and self-learning – the 21st century skills that employers look for
  • Great for scenarios where application skills matter
  • 21st century skills require guide on the side. Simply acquiring knowledge is worthless now.
