How to Launch a Successful Beta Program by Juan Fernandez

Juan started his career as a software developer and in a few years, co-founded a health brand, “Primum”, where he worked as a CTO for 5 years. Over the years, he realized that problem solving is one area of his work that interests him most and as a result, he decided to make a transition to Product Management. He started his product management journey with Audiense, a platform that helps users to understand their audience.
We invited Juan for a Product talk on “Launching a Successful Beta Program”.
Juan says a beta program is the second phase of product testing in which a sample of product audience tries the product out i.e. your product is already in the environment and ready to test on devices that it hadn’t been tested on before including multiple browsers on the web and multiple mobile phones.
According to him, in this agile world, one should always keep the product in hands of the real user for real-time testing if you want to gather any valuable and usable feedback for making further improvements to your product. He adds beta program is an organized way of delivering a product to a small set of an audience before delivering it to the entire population.
Pragmatic Leaders asked:

“Why is it Necessary to Launch a Successful Beta Program?”

Juan says it is very important to launch a beta program before launching the final product because it helps you to avoid launching something that is going to fail in the market, understand users and also helps you to get the product out on the street without sales and marketing activities planned for an actual launch.
He adds a product manager’s validation is crucial to make sure your product will drive business by delivering monetizable customer value. The beta test will help you realize if you are providing customer value if you are solving a real problem, if customers are willing to pay for it, and if what they are willing to pay for is enough. It is very important for the product manager to validate this as soon as possible before delivering the product.

Flipped Classroom

Our learners learn by discussing and debating on real-world problems and are actively involved in the solution design process.

Conventional classroom

Sage on Stage

  • A teacher shares the knowledge via live presentations
  • Teachers are at the center of the learning and considered sage on stage
  • Knowledge transfer is one-way and the focus is on knowledge retention
  • Learners don’t get to discuss their ideas or opinions in the class
  • Hence, most learners are unable to apply these concepts in their everyday work life
  • Great for scenarios, where knowledge acquisition and retention is the only focus

Flipped classroom

Guide on side

  • Learners are the center of the universe
  • Classes are meant for healthy discussions and debates on topics
  • Learners go through the material on their own provided by the mentors
  • Mentors work as guide on the side, with the learners
  • Learners develop skills on problem solving, critical thinking and self-learning – the 21st century skills that employers look for
  • Great for scenarios where application skills matter
  • 21st century skills require guide on the side. Simply acquiring knowledge is worthless now.
