In this exclusive Ask Me Anything session we discussed the holistic learning experience at Pragmatic Leaders with Talvinder Singh- Founder at Pragmatic Leaders.
Talvinder Singh started the session with a brief about what is product management?. He explained that Managing a product encompasses everything related to a specific product, from creating a concept and studying the targeted audience to developing, producing and marketing it (and providing customer support afterward).
He took the session forward by explaining the role of a product manager. He says Product Managers are responsible for guiding the success of a product and leading the cross-functional team that is responsible for improving it. It is an important organizational role — especially in technology companies — that sets the strategy, roadmap, and feature definition for a product or product line. The position may also include marketing, forecasting, and profit and loss (P&L) responsibilities. As a product manager, the only way we could lead people is via influence. It’s very important for a product manager to have a clear vision of what the customers want. He is responsible for bridging the gap between problem space and solution space.
He says it is very important for a product manager to move from a fuzzy to a fantastic version, to identify goals. The goals help in bringing strategy to life. They also work in tandem to achieve that strategy and guide the work of your team. That’s because goals work with the strategy to help everyone understand the big picture.
According to him, understanding user persona is a very important concept for a product manager. As we have biases, assumptions, and perspectives which knowingly? Unknowingly influence our decisions. It’s very important to understand that we know to design it for our users and not ourselves. All the users have different goals, attitudes, motivations, mental models, relationships, pain points, ecological processes. One very important fact for the product managers to keep in mind is that if they design for everyone then they make no one happy. They should design according to the type of users. Persona is a specific instance of archetypes that represent groups of real users who have similar attributes. In a situation, persona should capture all demographics, behavior, goals, and sacrifices.
Moving forward with the user persona he highlighted the focus on goal extraction. He says we need to identify the different goals across different personas. We need to do this to triangulate the themes that personas care about it at large. Now we need to start working on the user’s requirement. After creating multiple stories and persona we need to know to prioritize them. We need to prioritize based on customer value. After we have sorted our features and narrowed down the exact requirements or the priority sequence, that’s when wireframes come !! It’s important for us to work on the base content and create a flow first. A website wireframe, also known as a page schematic or screen blueprint, is a visual guide that represents the skeletal framework of a website.
He concluded the session saying, Product Management is not a science. Be bold to explore various approaches before settling on one and it’s very important to keep an open eye and practice improving existing products.
